I'm involved in computer science since the mid 80s, first contact IBM 5170 (my first computer was a Commodore 128). Beginning from the late 1990s I've traveld around Europe as a self-employed IT consultant and I worked for many and big companies through all branches. We've developed enterprise solutions for web based management systems including the data infrastructure with the databases, enterprise resource planning systems and data warehouses in the back end.
The last 15 years, I have been working as a research associate of the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences among other things. Since 2015 I have been working almost exclusively in the field of Open Infrastructure with OpenStack, Kubernetes and CEPH and also private 5G networks. Over the past few years, I have taught various courses at the university, currently focusing on the area of ERP systems.
I am supporting ad working in open source communities with passion and full conviction. Since over a decade I am member of the OpenInfra Foundation (2016), co-founder of the OIF user group Lower-Saxony (2019), member of the Open Source Business Alliance (2023) and since 2026 ALASCA e. V.

This talk highlights the significance of sovereign IT infrastructure through the lens of a long-standing, research-driven initiative at the Campus Lingen of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. Since 2015, a private cloud environment actually based on OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Ceph has been operated on-site, providing researchers with full control over their data, computing resources, and software stack. Since 2023, this infrastructure has been further enhanced through integration with a private 5G Campus Network, enabling low-latency, high-bandwidth, and secure connectivity for cutting-edge research in areas such as Industry 4.0, logistics, and edge computing.
The combination of open-source technologies and sovereign control ensures transparency, reproducibility, and compliance with data protection regulations—key pillars of trustworthy research. By maintaining full ownership and governance over its digital infrastructure, the university fosters innovation, supports interdisciplinary collaboration, and serves as a model for sustainable, researcher-centric digital ecosystems. This case study demonstrates and will name some examples from real research projects like 5G Campusnet, TiDa5G, ReSiSTAR and others, that sovereign infrastructure in the sense of Sovereign Cloud Stack is not merely a technical choice but a strategic enabler of academic independence, data integrity, and future-proof research in an increasingly interconnected and regulated world.
