Jan Larwig is a senior software engineer at STACKIT and Core Maintainer of OAuth2 Proxy. He works mainly with Go, Kubernetes, GitOps, and focuses on building cloud-native platforms and tools that help other developers ship software faster. Jan enjoys making the internals of cloud-native systems practical, understandable, and worth experimenting with.
Have you ever found a bug or wished for a feature in an open source tool you use, but you don't know where to start? This talk is for those who have thought "Someone should fix this", but not yet made the step to "I sent a PR".
Drawing on experience as a Core Maintainer of OAuth2 Proxy and contributor to projects including Kubernetes, GitHub Linguist, GoogleCloudPlatform magic-modules and Kubernetes cloud-provider-kind. In this session, I will show you how to approach open source projects like an engineer. We will cover how to read a repository, understand contribution guidance and governance, evaluate testing and review expectations, and make a realistic first contribution. Rather than idealizing open source, this talk will be focusing on the practical mechanics of how projects work and how to turn an observed bug or missing feature into a meaningful contribution.
